Long known to the campervan nomads who did the European surf trail down to Morocco for the northern hemi winter, this is the ‘graveyard view’, the best vantage for evaluating Izaro potential. AUSTRALIAN ODYSSEY TRAINING CAMP – DAY 3

After an early breakfast at the Vikings SLSC clubhouse, the troops gathered on the beach for a series of physical challenges. They included pushing a trailer-mounted jet ski across the sand for a hundred metres. In this domain of the Billabong Odyssey, the challengers need to not just be bona-fide ocean aware surfers, but iron men and women as well. BILLABONG ODYSSEY SURFERS CHALLENGE CORTES BANK’S OPEN OCEAN WAVES

An all-star cast of big wave riders was on hand for the day-long tow-surfing session, including Cortes veterans Mike Parsons, Brad Gerlach and Ken “Skindog” Collins along with first-timers Shane Dorian, Noah Johnson and Josh Loya. Also joining the session was 6-time World Champion Kelly Slater and Chris Malloy, who reached the spot after their own harrowing all-night voyage. EL NINO’S HUGE SURF RAISES THE BAR IN THE BILLABONG XXL BIG WAVE AWARDS

With the winter high surf season reaching its halfway point, entries are flooding in for the third annual Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards presented by Surfline. Photos and videos of dozens of the most amazing rides of the year are now available for public view at the Billabong XXL website. The competition awards a prize of at least $60,000 to the surfer who rides the biggest wave of the year, based on the photographic evidence. The contest runs through March, after which a panel of experts will analyze the Big Wave Awards in Los Angeles in April.
